# Florence’s red dome has another shell inside

The climb up Brunelleschi’s dome passes between two brick shells. Michelangelo’s David moved indoors; a copy now stands outside Palazzo Vecchio. At Babae, a small window still serves wine through a house wall. Beside the old market, simmered tripe goes into a bread roll for lunch.

### Brunelleschi's dome: Two shells inside the dome

Another dome lies beneath the red tiles.

When Brunelleschi took on the job, the cathedral already had a huge octagonal opening waiting to be covered. He built an inner and an outer shell, linked by ribs, with passages between them. The bricks did not simply run in horizontal courses: upright bricks broke across them in a herringbone pattern, helping the work stay stable during construction. People climbing the dome today enter that gap. What is invisible from the square becomes stairs underfoot and curved masonry overhead.

### Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze: David moves indoors

The original spent centuries beside city hall.

When Michelangelo finished David, the statue did not go high on the cathedral as first intended. It was placed beside the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio instead. After centuries in the political heart of Florence, it moved to the Accademia in 1873 for protection. The museum now gives the original a dedicated space, while a copy stands in the square. The same pose appears in two settings: one preserves the work, the other marks where it once joined civic life.

### BABAE: Wine passed through the wall

A tiny arch made room for a wine sale.

Some Florentine families owned vineyards outside the city and cut small windows into their city houses to sell estate wine directly. Buyers did not need to enter the house: the sale took place across the wall. Babae preserves and reuses one of these windows beside its door, a small arch within the stonework. It connected country production with the city street. The opening was small, but enough for an everyday transaction.

### Trippaio del Porcellino - Nencioni: A tripe sandwich eaten standing

From the simmering pot into a split roll.

The tripe stall beside the old market turns offal into a meal you can hold. Lampredotto uses part of a cow's stomach, simmered until tender, sliced and put into bread with green sauce or chili sauce to taste. These vendors are called trippai in Florence. Customers often eat beside the stall before moving on. Close to jewelry windows and palaces, this use of offal and bread remains part of the city's street food.
