### Harlem River: The old bridge was a water pipe

New York’s oldest surviving bridge first carried water, not pedestrians.

High Bridge opened in 1848 as part of the Croton Aqueduct, carrying fresh water across the Harlem River. Restoration returned pedestrians to the former supply route in 2015.

### Fort Washington Park: The lighthouse a book saved

The bridge made this small lighthouse largely obsolete; a children’s book helped it remain.

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge gave the structure a following in 1942. When removal was proposed, readers and residents objected, and the red lighthouse stayed beneath the bridge.

### Midtown: Library stacks beneath the lawn

The grass underfoot conceals book storage for the New York Public Library.
