# Venice’s gondola ferry goes straight across

The Santa Sofia ferry lands by the Rialto fish market. The horses outside St. Mark’s are copies; the originals are indoors. At Cantina Do Mori, copper vessels hang over a counter with an entrance on each of two lanes. San Barnaba’s church front became a library in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

106 stories are available in the app.

### Traghetto Santa Sofia: This gondola goes straight across

The fish market is on the other bank.

A gondola ferry crosses between Santa Sofia and the Rialto fish market, filling a gap in the walking route between bridges. Unlike a sightseeing charter along the Grand Canal, it simply takes you across. Wait at the landing, ride over, step off and continue on foot. Famous as the canal is, people living on either bank still need to cross it every day.

### St Mark's Basilica: The horses outside are copies

The ancient bronzes now stand indoors.

Four horses line up above the front of St. Mark's Basilica. The originals once stood in Constantinople. Venetians brought them back in the early thirteenth century, making them a display of the republic's maritime power. To protect the ancient bronze sculptures, they were later moved into the basilica's museum and replaced outside with copies. The horses seen from the square preserve a familiar city silhouette; the originals require a museum visit.

### Cantina Do Mori: Copper vessels above, little stamps below

The sandwiches carry a name of their own.

At Cantina Do Mori, old copper vessels hang overhead beside wine jars and photographs. A former owner collected these water-drawing containers and later hung them in the bar. Below, a long counter connects two entrances, one on Calle Do Mori and the other on Calle Galeazza. Small square sandwiches on the counter are called francobolli, or stamps. Customers eat these little filled pieces of bread standing up with a glass of wine.

### San Barnaba: The church that played a library

Indiana Jones used this door on screen.

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, San Barnaba's church front plays the entrance to a library. The hero goes in to search for clues before heading underground; the real church has no such tunnel. The former church now hosts exhibitions. Its square and canal are accessible on foot.
